In 1988, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) put into effect universal precautions laws requiring all healthcare workers to wear protective gloves in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Protectant Safety was originally founded in 1988 (as Chagrin Safety Supply) to assist in meeting the unprecedented demand for this protective equipment. Protectant Safety product lines soon grew to include other disposable personal protective products, such as masks and gowns.
In October of 2001, Protectant Safety was awarded the USPS master contract for the anthrax crisis, shipping over 200 million nitrile gloves to combat the deadly bacteria once thought to threaten over 700,000 postal workers.
In 2003, Protectant Safety responded to the SARS crisis by shipping 1.5 million respirator masks to the Canadian Health Ministry in Toronto. Our work with the GSA earned us a top supplier rating of 97% by the Federal Supply Service (FSS).
